When stepping into the Chula SuanLuang-Samyan area, one will be able to perceive the green area within the extensive area which is destined to expand continuously based on our goal to develop a “GREEN & CLEAN CITY” with a variety of policies that will help develop sustainable environment all around. It will be implemented by increasing the proportion of green areas and the number of big trees, in conjunction with the policy to promote the use of clean energy vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the area. Additionally, there is also a plan to develop an efficient and sustainable waste management system, including piloting the development of a water management system that treats wastewater from residential buildings and is used to water the plants within the Chulalongkorn Centenary Park.

We believe that the quality of life of today’s urbanites is to live close to nature and green spaces. Therefore, we have established a policy to increase local green areas as much as possible to create clean air and which can be accessed by everyone. From the 2020 statistics, the Chula green area and the surrounding neighborhood is at a ratio of 1 person per 19.8 square meters, which is higher than the WHO standard that requires green space at the rate of 1 person per 9 square meters. In addition, there is also a goal to increase the number of big trees in the area. In 2020, the ​​Chulalongkorn University area has more than 10,000 big trees and this is set to be increased as we have realized the importance of big tree ecosystems, which in addition to providing shade, the big trees are also able to store tremendous amounts of carbon when compared to smaller trees. It is expected to alleviate climate change and reduce global warming as well. Therefore, it is not surprising that when stepping into the Chula district, one can feel the cooling effects of the shady green area.

Another outstanding green space district landmark in the heart of the city is the Chulalongkorn Centenary Park, which is situated on a green area of ​​more than 29 rai (approx. 46,400 sq.m.). It was a green area created as a gift for people of all ages where they can come and enjoy a breath of fresh air close to nature. Additionally, they will be able to also join in various activities organized for the community, whether it is sports, music, or various cultural activities throughout the year, to create opportunities for the local communities to access various valuable activities in a variety of ways. There is also the PARK@SIAM, a small garden of 5.2 rai (approx. 8,300 sq.m.) located in the heart of Siam Square shopping center. It is another city lung located right in the middle of a verdant city that can be easily accessed via public transport and is expected to truly respond to every urban relaxation needs.

In an era where we are faced with air pollution stemming from dust and smoke, it is, thus, important to pay close attention to the quality of air that will help create a basic good quality of life for everyone in the community. Therefore, we have established various projects that contain policies that will contribute towards creating good air quality. One such policy is to promote the use of clean energy vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the area. This can be implemented by converting public transportation to electric vehicles, such as electric buses, electric tuk-tuks, electric cars, etc., which can effectively provide more travel options throughout every area within the district to help facilitate travel for the local community and thus help reduce the number of private car use. There are now more instances of students and people in the community using bicycles for their commute, or riding electric tuk-tuks, that are more easily available through the use of an application on a smartphone, or enjoy riding electric scooters around the buildings in style.

 

Additionally, the issue of Bangkok’s atmosphere that is constantly being covered with toxic dust has entered a critical state with PM2.5 values ​​exceeding global standards, which is currently set at 10 micrograms per cubic meter. While in Thailand, the limit is set to not exceed 50 micrograms per cubic meter. Air quality monitoring stations have been installed to help measure the amount of dust in the air with surveillance efficiency and accurately assessing the condition of toxic dust, as well as, effectively assessing the health impact on people within the Samyan Smart City area. In addition to people receiving updates on the local air quality through the website, they can also opt for notifications sent to their smartphones as well.

Efficient resource management is considered one of the core aspects in helping to maximize the turnover of resources, for the organization, the people within the community, the environment, and most importantly, our planet. Therefore, we have plans to develop various resource management pilots in the field of waste and water management.

The waste that we bring back for reutilization includes waste in the form of food, different types of packaging, paper, soft plastic bags, as well as, electronic waste. The recycled waste can be proved to be useful, such as cooked food waste can be used as animal feed while the uncooked food can be processed through the BIO-DIGESTOR and used as plant fertilizers. Recycled waste can be brought back for reprocessing and then reused, etc. It is expected that by 2022, 80% of food waste can be recycled and become a significant part in helping to build a clean and livable city in the future.

The PMCU’s water management system pilot development is a policy to carry out wastewater from consumption to be treated and reused to maximize its benefits within the ​​Suan Luang – Sam Yan area, especially in areas where there is no necessity for drinking water. Currently, PMCU uses tap water to replenish the pool to maintain the water level and water plants for the Chulalongkorn Centenary Park. Therefore, it has begun to recycle the wastewater obtained from the residents of the CU TERRACE and CU iHOUSE buildings and pass it back through the wastewater treatment process and use it for watering the plants within the Chulalongkorn Centennial Park. This has effectively helped save up to 55 million liters of water per year which translate to about 150,000 baht per year in water bills and help the plants to thrive and flourish into being the lungs of the community in a sustainable manner.
