Chulalongkorn University continues its CU SMART CITY project with the signing of a cooperation agreement on electrical power development with MEA.

Prof. Dr. Bundhit Eua-arporn, President of Chulalongkorn University, together with Mr. Kirapat Jiamset, Governor of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, jointly signed the  “Cooperation on the Development of Electricity Distribution Systems to Support the Chula Smart City Project”,  and was witnessed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wisanu Subsompon, Vice President for Asset Management and Innovation supervising the Chula Property Management Office (PMCU), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jittisak Thammapornphilas, Assistant to the President of Chulalongkorn University, Ms. Worapong Sukteeranantachai, Director of the PMCU, together with executives from both parties. The event was held at the hall in front of the Auditorium on the 6th floor of Wattanawiphas Building, Metropolitan Electricity Authority (Head Office), Khlong Toei.

The cooperation project for the development of the power distribution system to support the Chula Smart City project will consist of the development of 2 substations that are located within the Chulalongkorn University campus, i.e. the Samyan Substation and the Pathumwan Substation, to support the development of a microgrid system connected to the solar rooftop of approximately 20 megawatts and the installation of an energy storage system that will occur in the future. It also includes linking energy management with an intelligent meter system, or AMI. In addition, power cables throughout the campus and the surrounding areas will also be buried underground to ensure an electrical system that is sufficient, stable, safe, and at the same time, create an attractive scenery worthy of being a walkable city. The improvement to the distribution system and burying of the cables in the Siam Square area is scheduled to be completed by 2019, and all other areas by 2021. Upon completion, the project should enable automatic control and correction of power failures, control the quality of electricity, such as the voltage, to be within the established service standards, and enable electricity users to manage their electricity usage accordingly.
