First & Last Mile Traveling

The Samyan Smart City is an area located right in the city center and is the commercial center of Bangkok where it houses various educational institutions, office buildings, shopping malls, as well as, numerous residence projects. This, inevitably, results in a large volume of commuting within the area where a large number of people travel in and out of the district and conduct various activities on a daily basis. Therefore, we recognize the importance of continually improving travel options and select new technologies on a continuing basis that can meet the changing lifestyles of these travelers, enabling access to every point within the area with a variety of travel options by reducing the connection points with the main mass transit system (Seamless Transportation). It is also to support the first and last mile journeys and advocate for efficient vehicle sharing and facilitate convenience through the use of location tracking through an application. Most importantly, every travel option will be based on vehicles that uses clean energy.

Key initiatives for 2021

  • A public transport network development project that comprehensively covers the whole area, where access to public transport within a 500 meters walking distance is made available.
  • Support into becoming a WALKABLE CITY, with projects to expand footpaths, as well as, creating a COVER WAY to cover the entire area.
  • Provide at least 5 travel alternatives in the first and last mile based on clean energy and travel sharing.

Target to 2030

  • Policy to promote the reduction of private car use within the area, including supporting the use of clean energy vehicles.
  • Install EV Charging Stations covering the entire area that will be able to support charging for at least 200 vehicles, by the year 2024.
  • Ensure that executive and university vehicles will be 100% EVs by the year 2027.

First & Last Mile Travelling

Travel with the use of clean energy that can be shared.…Economical, and help save the world.

If comparing public transport akin to the main artery, then the First & Last Mile travel can then be compared to a capillary that nourishes hard-to-reach areas. Therefore, we recognize the importance of creating a variety of travel options within the area where the local community has access to a variety of options according to their lifestyles and needs, and thus, help reduce the number of connection points with the main mass transit system (Seamless Transportation) and assist them in the first and last mile travel effectively. For example, taking an electric tuk-tuk that can be easily called via a mobile phone app with just a single, or riding a cool electric scooter to make your way between school buildings.

All travel options will focus on the ease of use through mobile phone applications where each journey can be made through the use of clean energy. This is expected to help locals reduce their reliance on private cars, ensure increased convenience, save time, and also help in reducing air pollution, traffic jams, and ultimately improve the quality of life for everyone within the community, in terms of health, as well as, time and financial management. This can prove to be the most efficient option for practically everyone.

MASS TRANSIT NETWORK

Traveling to the Samyan Smart City can be made easily via various public transportation options. These include both BTS skytrain lines through the Siam Square Station and National Stadium transit stations, and the Samyan MRT Station, or if traveling by bus, commuters have the choice to choose up to 30 bus lines from various areas throughout Bangkok.

  • 2 BTS lines / MRT / 30 bus lines

CU POP BUS  (EV Shuttle bus)

As the location of the Chulalongkorn University is situated in the city center, where it is effectively the center of educational institutions, commercial districts, and surrounded by offices, shopping malls, retail shops, and residence projects, therefore, there are a lot of travel activities passing through the university campus throughout the day.

Therefore, local public transportation is a very important factor that is needed to transport a large number of commuters to various buildings. We have implemented changes to the Chula shuttle bus, or as it is commonly known as the CU Pop Bus, from its original that used gasoline to using energy from electricity instead.

This was done to reduce CO2 and PM2.5 dust emissions within the area. The gradual change was made starting in 2014 until the present. Now, all Chula shuttle buses utilizes 100% electricity, which in addition to being a safe mode of travel, is also free of charge and helps to reduce air pollution and the need for private car use to travel in the area.

Traveling by CU Pop Bus is easy and convenient, and its position can also be easily checked in real time through an application as well. This allows travelers to plan their itinerary before they arrive at each stop and also helps to facilitate the general public who may not be familiar with the area to travel conveniently as well.

Total number of buses: 20
Total number of routes: 5
Service Target Group: Students, teachers, staff of Chulalongkorn University, and the general public

Muvmi ( EV Tuk-Tuk Sharing)

Electric tuk-tuks that run throughout the Samyan Smart City area, are also known as MuvMi. This innovative mode of transport is a sandbox opportunity for a Thai startup company, namely Urban Mobility Tech Co., Ltd. to develop a new generation of travel alternatives. The EV tuk-tuk was tested and put into actual use within the Chula area in 2018. The project was conceived from a transit gap between the large mass transit systems, such as the BTS and MRT, and the inaccessibility to small alleys or places that are located along the main roads. The “MuvMi” project is a combination of an “on-demand” application, where the service, which does not ply regular routes, can be requested from wherever you are located at any time without the need to wait, and combined with the “sharing” model, that applies modern technology to manage its usage.

This allows people traveling on the same route and being within the same vicinity to share the same car, thus resulting in an affordable pricing structure. It is suitable for the current cost of living and is available to students and office workers. Additionally, it is also absolutely convenient and suitable for the present lifestyle, especially for students and workers who need to make short and fast commutes within the surrounding area.

In addition to its application, another highlight of MuvMi is the use of 100% electric vehicles to provide passenger pick-up and drop-off services. The electric tuk-tuk started a pilot service for the first time in July 2018 and has been developed continuously until the present. It has received a tremendously good response from the local community and has since clocked up about 250,000 trips per year, or approximately 700 trips per day. In addition, passengers can travel with confidence on every journey as MuvMi has undergone a collision analysis with the National Institute of Technology and Materials (MTEC), which ensures that it is safe for users, as well as, being environmentally friendly.

EV Car Sharing

Haupcar, electric car-sharing for rent. Helps reduce pollution and traffic congestions

Those who pass through the Chula community usually include students, faculty members, personnel, as well as the general public who live within the area. Traveling outside the area would be through the use of public transportation. In 2020, Chulalongkorn University partnered up with Haupcar, the first car-sharing startup in Thailand, and introduced a new car rent option where it is expected to the old rules by adopting new technology to provide a convenient, simple, and flexible service. Car rentals can be booked, unlocked, and paid easily via a mobile phone. It is also possible to book a rental car for a short period of time starting from 30 minutes, thus enabling a creative change in car rental behavior.

This allows people in the area to rent a car to travel more freely and conveniently with an affordable cost.

Presently, there are approximately 10 rental cars positioned at various stations throughout the area surrounding the university. In the future, there is also a policy to increase the number of vehicles, all of which will be converted to electric vehicles. Providing such a service is thus expected to help respond to the policy of efficiently alleviating existing traffic problems, insufficient parking, as well as, helps reduce pollution. It is also expected to reduce car possession rate and assist the new generation to save money and use vehicles in a more cost-effective manner.

E-Scooter Sharing

When entering the Chulalongkorn University area, you might see students riding cool electric scooters commuting between each building on campus. This is another modern travel option where first-time users might be hesitant on how to use it. However, after their first trial, it becomes easily apparent that it is absolutely easy to use and at the same time, fun. Students, teenagers, or even adults, can ride it with ease, and we can see a lot of students who rent and use it with total enjoyment and has eventually become another after-school activity that can be enjoyed with their friends.

PMCU partners with Beam Mobility Co., Ltd. , largest shared e-mobility operator in Asia Pacific as a trail project under Samyan Smart Mobility to official launch e-scooter service around Chulalongkorn University, Samyan and Siam area as another sustainable way to commute for students and visitors that provide the services under the Beam application.

The first university in Thailand who add e-scooter as another sustainable transport option to the community. We think this project can help us solve some issues we have seen in the past such as lack of sustainable transport options for short commutes, long periods of waiting for transportation in rush hour etc. and as it’s easier and faster for the students to go from point A to point B, we think this also can help students engage in more activities inside the campus.

Also, we are working on safety measures; such as age limit, speed control, no go zone, riders’ insurance and Beam Safe Academy inside the campus with Beam Mobility to ensure that students know the riding rules and ride them safely.

LILUNA (Chula Car pool)

When shared travels has become better known and is now popular within the Chula community, creating a community to serve as a platform or an intermediary for connecting Chula people’s travel sharing under the concept of “Going the same way, travel together” is to help reduce traffic congestion, reduce the number of cars entering the area, as well as, help save cost. We have selected partners who are Thai startups who have develop applications for car pools, under the name of “Liluna”.

In 2020, a closed group was created exclusively for the Chulalongkorn community, for journeys with the origin and destination that are in close proximity, to enable carpooling trips within the Chula or nearby areas. It is considered another interesting travel option and has proved to be very popular as well.

EV Sharing Station

PMCU promotes the use of electric vehicles with 87 electric charging stations in the SAMYAN SMART CITY, throughout the Siam Square area. Suanluang-Samyan aims to complete the installation of 200 chargers by 2023.

In addition to a variety of clean energy transportation options throughout the district, we also promote the use of EVs (Electric Vehicles), which is becoming increasingly popular, as it is an environmentally friendly solution that helps reduce air pollution emissions and lessen the greenhouse effect from carbon dioxide, including reducing the amount of small particulate matter or PM 2.5 that are usually released from the car engines uses gasoline as fuel.

In addition, it also supports and encourages people to use electric vehicles more.

PMCU, has therefore, established a policy to install electric charging stations within the area where the first station was installed in 2019. The Chamchuri Square Building currently has 3 chargers that have been officially opened for service, and in 2021, 3 more chargers have been installed at the CU Terrace and the Pillow 28 parking lot.

Presently, there are now a total of 27 stations, or 87 charging terminals, and it is expected that the number of charging stations will continue to increase to support future increases of electric vehicles traveling through the area.
